How to Keep Chickens Healthy

Chicken health is the most important aspect when raising your flock. Having one unhealthy chicken will inevitably lead to two unhealthy chickens, then three, then four and so on. Therefore, it is crucial that hen owners learn and properly take of their chicken's health. First and foremost most chicken ailments are brought about by a poor living conditions. Therefore, it is imperative that chicken owners learn to properly maintain a domicile for their flock. Second, a flock owner must be able to check chickens regularly and make sure that a chicken is not developing any illnesses or diseases. Lastly, hen keepers should keep ample reference material around, this helps the hen owner to identify, and treat small ailments a chicken might have.

If chicken owners do not take proper care of their chicken coops then their flocks will soon become sick. A hen owner must keep the chicken coop well ventilated, so the chicken does not suffer from in grown bacteria from chicken waste. Next, a flock keeper must keep the coop in a some what clean condition, by cleaning up chicken excrement and regularly washing the coop. The hen owner might try lowering some perches so chicken do no develop bumblefoot when they try to fly down. If care consideration is taken with chicken housing, then most illnesses and ailments that chickens develop will not occur.

Flock keepers must also be aware of their flocks, and catch weird behavior by each chicken. Chicken owners should take careful note and survey to see if any chickens are not lively or up and about. If your hens are holding their wings and tails down, and not really moving then you can suspect that the chicken might be ill and in need of some care. Additionally, check to see if your hen as any eye or nasal discharge, this may be a sign of an illness. If you suspect that one of your hens is sick, immediately isolate that hen in a warm, and well ventilated environment with plenty of food and water. I find it handy to have some reference material around, just to make sure I know what I am dealing with.

The single most important thing a hen owner needs to raise a flock is information. The right information can help your flock stay healthy and productive for years to come. Try to keep as many reference books as possible, this will make it easier to find symptoms, and even treat minor ailments, and injuries. Not only do the reference books help find symptoms, but they tell you when to call a professional for help. Lastly, when raising a coop try to keep a poultry veterinarian's number handy, this will save you time and energy when you are looking for the expert veterinarian in poultry.
